I really love the parallels you draw between a queer person choosing a new name and a username!! Especially because I know it's a common experience for trans people to start using their online alias as a transition name, since they already respond to it. I was using Azure as my alias long before I figured out I was trans, and I used it as my transition name for a long time! (Not anymore, though, because I don't want my online activities to find a way back to my real life. Not unless A Lot Of People Get Really Chill About A Lot Of Stuff Very Quickly, anyways, lmao)
